The basic problems facing the world today are not susceptible to a military solution. War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today. We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.
